Some of the habitat in that area still contains oil from the spill over 20 years ago now. Most of the area is cleaned up and animals and wildlife are abundant again, but there are still some low populations in areas that aren’t completely clean yet.
The Exxon Valdez spill killed 250,000 sea birds and 3,000 sea otters. You’d think after such a terrible environmental toll that cleanup technology would improve. However, it hasn’t. Perhaps the most devistating legacy of the Exxon Valdez is the inability to learn from our mistakes and improve our methods of oil cleanup. As a result, more wildlife will likely be lost due to the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion.
