how the water cycle affects water levels

Basically, some of the precipitation that falls on the ground gets absorbed by the soil and becomes ground water. Some of the water travels close to the surface and emerges quickly through streambeds and some of the water goes deeper into the Earth due to gravity. If the water and water levels, below which the soil is saturated, match up, it moves both horizontally and vertically. The water moving downward can also meet materials that don’t absorb it, and therefore travels in a horizontal direction, eventually emerging.
