George Crum, a Native American, was working as a chef at a resort in Saratoga Springs, New York in 1853. A customer asked for thinner French fries, so Crum skewered potato pieces extremely thin. The result was the potato chip.
As I heard the legend (just in general, no proof), the customer kept demanding thinner and thinner fried potatoes, and the cook got frustrated. So to spite the customer for being a jerk, the cook sliced them paper thin. Except, the guy loved them and history was made.
