There are various theories on the Moon’s formation. One which comes immediately to mind states that a large asteroid impacted the Earth in its early stages of development. Eventually the material coalesced, forming the Moon. Another, the capture theory, states that the Moon formed elsewhere in the solar system and was captured by the Earth’s gravitational pull. Then, we also have the condensation theory. This theory states that the Earth and Moon formed simultaneously in the same vicinity and therefore the Moon naturally began orbiting the larger object. This last theory has a few holes. If the two formed out of the same material, they both should have the same composition; they do not have the same composition.
These are just a few theories.
