According to Jeff Knight, a climate scientist at U.K. Met, stagnant circulation of the jet stream was one of the causes of wildfires in Russia. Normally, the jet stream helps regulate the climate in the Northern Hemisphere by moving air currents around from west to east. In summer of 2010, the jet stream stalled, trapping weather systems in an area. Because it was already warm in Russia at that time, the trapped weather systems worsen the situation. Along with overgrowth of vegetation in the forests, global warming and other factors, the wildfires in Russia became a devastating reality.
