How was BP able to do damage control when the oil spill happened?

BP has tried a few things since the oil spill. The “top kill” method was supposed to plug up the pipes with heavy mud, then seal the spill with concrete. That method failing, BP moved on to the cap method, which reportedly collects 15,000 barrels of oil per day. BP is attempting to install another containment system that will bring the total oil collection to 53,000 barrels per day.
