How is the Volt different from other hybrid cars?

One of the primary differences between the volt and other hybrid cars is that it can run off of solely power from the electric battery for trips up to 40 miles. Other hybrids typically can only use power from the electric battery to help in cooperation with the gas engine (Honda Civic Hybrid, for example). This ability to utilize the all electric motor is one step closer to electric vehicles and allows short trips to occur without using any gas or creating any emissions.
