The use of biotechnology is controversial when it comes to the environment. Researchers are calculating the risks of genes from biotech plants moving into natural plants, creating new species. Also, what would happen when insects become resistant to crops that were supposed to repel them? Another concern is that biotechnology is messing with the nutrition of our produce by changing its genetic structure. However, biotechnology can be positive for the environment if it creates varieties of crops that will eliminate the need for pesticides and improve soil conservation.
In Mexico, there are reports where Biotech corn seeds are being found in farmers crops of native corn seeds. Research shows that as much as 95 per cent of maize fields in the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Pueblo contain evidence of GM contamination.
