Tornadoes begin in a severe thunderstorm; this thunderstorm collects wind coming into it and forms a funnel. The air in the funnel begins to spin faster and creates a low pressure area which collects more air. Most severe thunderstorms are produced where cold dry polar air combines with warm moist tropical air.
