Thawing permafrost can damage roads, pipelines, bridges, buildings and other elements of infrastructure that were built on top of it. The thawing makes formerly ‘solid’ ground flooded and unable to support the weight of structures built on it. A lot of money is spent on repairing the damage. In addition, oil pipelines need to be elevated from the ground to avoid further melting as the transported petroleum is usually heated (to flow fast enough).
