The tallest wind-generated waves are created during hurricanes. Hurricane Ivan caused what is thought to be the tallest wind-generated waves on record in 2004. Sensors at the Naval Research Laboratory measured the crest of a wave at 91 feet high. Scientists suggested that the sensors might have missed some even large waves – up to 132 feet high.
