Costa Rica is very successful at its effort to become the first carbon neutral country. The idea started in 2007 with hopes of accomplishing carbon neutrality by Costa Rica’s 200th birthday in 2021. Since 2007, 90% of Costa Rica’s electricity comes from renewable sources (hydropower, wind, and geothermal). Now they are in the process of introducing electric transit, using clean bio-fuel / bio-diesel for cars, and reforesting its jungles.
Costa Rica has been a flagship country for ecotourism as well. This means that they are using conservation to protect their forests and make money while doing this from their tourism industry. Preserving forests help them move towards their carbon neutral goal.
