How is soil formed from compost?

Compost is simply organic matter that is broken down by worms and micro-organisms and oxidation.
Your kitchen scraps and grass clippings are not compost. They become compost after they are broken down.
Soil is a mixture of organic matter and mineral matter. Your compost won’t become a real part of the soil until it has been mixed in either by people or by worms passing back and forth through it.
