Landlines actually consume less power than computers. When fully on and in use, desktop computers consume about 150 watts of power. Laptops use a significantly smaller amount of energy–15-40 watts, depending on the type of computer.
But the most eco-friendly way to communicate would be the use of a mobile phone, which operates on battery power (but mobile phone chargers use about 10-20 watts). A landline uses 10 watts of power.
So, in terms of energy usage, fixed landlines could be considered more eco-friendly because they consume less power than a laptop or desktop computer that would be used to access Skype.
