Shale gas is released directly from the source were it is created, so unlike gasoline which requires refining, shale gas must only be accessed to be created. However, access can be a difficult process. Drilling companies must have high levels of understanding of the geochemical, structural, and in-situ rock properties. Shale is incredibly impermeable therefore the rock must be fractured to release the gas. To do so, high volumes of fracturing fluids (a mix of water and corrosive chemicals) are pumped into the shale to break down the rock and release the gas. From that point, wells can be made and the gas can be stored and tapped for usage and transportation.
