The safety of school lunches can vary from school to school and district to district. The USDA recently tightened their requirements for school lunches, namely the testing of beef products supplied to schools. It is reported in the USA today article where I located this information that McDonalds actually has more strict requirements on checking meat such as beef for bacteria than the government does.
In recent years much has been done to improve schhool lunches and make them nutrious and good for the students. More vegetables and fruits have been incorporated into the meals and many schools even offer a salad bar, which enables vegetarians to have a healthy and fulfilling lunch. It is always difficult to prepare food in bulk, but nutrition experts have helped develop menus that incorporate all of the food groups and provide heathy food.
