Deforestation accounts for nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, second only to that produced by the energy sector. The Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries (REDD) program assigns a monetary value to the carbon stored in forests, in the hopes that these countries will choose to reduce emissions and pursue more sustainable development. REDD hopes that these steps will serve to protect forest ecosystems, thereby reducing emissions and conserving biodiversity at the same time.
