Scientists think that the desert regularly expands and shrinks, depending on the climate. For example, in the early 1980’s, the southern band of the Sahara expanded into Sahel, a band of land that separates the Sahara from the savanna. In the mid 1980’s, the Sahara was back to its own size and the Sahel was green and wet again.
