Energy production is costly from an environmental standpoint when it is done in a non-sustainable way. Most of the energy that is made in the United States comes from either petroleum (37%), natural gas (24%) or coal (23%) according to the Energy Information Administration; and each of these sources pollutes the earth. There are negative externalities—see link—associated with production of energy in these ways, such as adverse health effects, crop depletion, and habitat destruction.
