Use catalytic converters, use cleaner burning fuel, drive much less. I am certain this has dozens of previous answers here if you do a search.
Yes improving catalytic converters would help towards decreasing air pollution. Another promising technology is hydrogen conversion kits. Hydrogen conversion kits produce hydrogen from water and electricity. This hydrogen is then pumped into the fuel injector. Hydrogen works with all internal combustion engines except diesel. Currently, hydrogen conversion kits are used to supplement gasoline. However, United Nuclear is in very close to releasing a complete hydrogen conversion kit for non-diesel vehicles.
