The canals in Venice are pretty polluted. There is no sewer system in Venice, so residents just dump their raw sewage right in the canals. There is a dependence on the tide to carry everything out into the ocean, but with barriers cutting off the tide, all the sewage just sits. In 2007, water pollution in the Venice canals was said to be below European standards. Since the beginning of the 20th century, there has also been an increase in the amount of industrial waste from the mainland that causes the canals to become so polluted that you can’t even swim in them anymore.
