Sensitivity to poison ivy varies from person to person and also varies throughout the lifetime of a single individual. There are some who are not at all allergic to poison ivy (about 10% of the population). For those who are allergic, the amount needed to cause a reaction varies. There are some who need only 1 nanogram (billionth of a gram) to cause a reaction, although the average is 100 nanograms.
