How is plastic threatening the Great Lakes Region?

Large bodies of water (especially oceans, but also large enough freshwater lakes) seem to collect and hold garbage that simply floats in the middle of the water.  Plastic especially is a problem for all of the usual reasons; plastic doesn’t degrade and it negatively affects plant and wildlife in the areas it occupies.  Trash (and by extension, non-recycled plastic) ends up in the Great Lakes because it is dumped there directly, or because it blows into the water due to negligent disposal of trash.
