Dextrose is separated from the starch of recently milled corn or sugarcane, huge fermenters then convert the dextrose into lactic acid which is a bi-product of the fermentation process. This compound is converted to lactide, and these lactide molecules are formed into large chains called polylactic acid or PLA. Liquid PLA is solidified into balls of resin. This resin is then shipped out to various factories were it is formed into a number of other products.
