How is ozone used to remove pesticides from produce?

Ozonated water (water containing dissolved ozone) has been shown to aid in the removal of residual pesticides from produce. Depending on ozone concentration and temperature, studies have shown that up to 99% of residual pesticides have been removed from vegetables. That number is high and not typical however. Ozonated water could prove to be a safe and feasible domestic cleaner of produce.
