Great Barrier Reef is 500,000 years old. This is actually considered to be young. The world’s first coral reefs formed about 500 million years ago.
According to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, there is evidence that the reef’s older structure was complete some 600,000 years ago. The current living structure, which has grown on top of the older structure, began growing about 20,000 years ago.
What is the difference between the current living structure and the older structure?
