You can be any age and work in entertainment (as in modeling or acting), but in most states you have to be 14 to work, and have a work permit. In New Jersey you can start some jobs at 11, like newspaper delivery. Also, non-hazardous jobs in a business owned by one’s parents have no legal minimum age requirement.
According to the Fair Labor Standards Act; children have to be a minimum of 16 to do hazardous work in agriculture and for particularly hazardous work in all other sectors of the economy is age 18. For jobs that are not particularly hazardous, the minimum age for employment in agriculture is 14 years, and in every other industry the minimum is 16.
The Fair Labor Standards Act sets wage, hours worked, and safety requirements for minors (individuals under age 18) working in jobs. The rules vary depending upon the particular age of the minor and the particular job involved. As a general rule, the FLSA sets 14 years of age as the minimum age for employment, and limits the number of hours worked by minors under the age of 16.
