Toyota has redesigned the Prius three times:
The 2001-2003 Prius upgrades featured a Toyota Hybrid System, which combined electric and gas power. It was “introduded as a four-door compact sedan” with 52 mpg in the city and 45 mpg on the highway (1).
The 2004-2009 Prius upgraded the power system to a Hybrid Synergy Drive. The new Prius also featured a rennovated exterior, more stylish than previous models and including a five-door hatchback trim (the only trim available).
The latest version, the 2010-2011 Prius, includes features that power it to a combined 50 mpg. It has a 1.8 liter-engine and an electic motor that uses a nickel-hydride battery.
I would estimate that another redesigned Prius will be introduced in 2012.
