Waves tend to largest at Maverick’s during the Northern hemisphere’s winter, when strong storm systems form in the Pacific North West and generate large amounts of swell. The bathymetry of Mavericks channels these strong swells into breaking waves that can reach up to 30 ft and beyond. The wave itself is extremely dangerous, and at a certain point can no longer be paddled into and must be towed into with a jet ski in order for the surfer to match the waves speed.
