Only four times in the history of the National Hockey League has a regular season game been held outdoors. The first was held in November,2003 in Edmonton, where the Oilers hosted the Montreal Canadiens in the Heritage Classic. The trend continued in 2008 and for the last three years on New Years Day, the NHL has held a so called ‘Winter Classic. The Buffalo Sabres hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2008, The Chicago Blackhawks hosted the Detroit Red Wings in 2009, and the Boston Bruins hosted the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010. The games were played at Ralph Wilson Jr Stadium, Wrigley Field, and Fenway Park, respectively.
The answer above only covers the NHL. The AHL’s Syracuse Crunch played the Binghamton Senators this year at the New York State Fairgrounds.
This coming season’s Winter Classic will be held at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh and pit the Penguins against the Capitals.
