How often do cities have to test their water systems for contamination?

It depends on the cleanliness of the city’s water.  If the test shows that the water complies with pollutant standards, the frequency of tests can be reduced.  The opposite applies – if water is highly contaminated, it usually is tested much more often.

They water source also determines frequency.  For example, a water source that is to be drinking water or piped into houses is going to be tested much more frequently than water used for municipal cleaning purposes.
