There is not a set time or period of time which you will see the aurora borealis, however there are many tools online which will aid you in predicting nights in which you will have the best possible chance to see them. One site I prefer is the Geophysical Institutes Auroral Forecaster, which is very user friendly. I will post the link below for you, good luck!
The aurora occurs whenever the solar wind hits the ionosphere of the earth. The lights occur from the charged particles reacting with solar particles and creating flashes of light that is seen as the aurora. Your best bet is to track the solar weather on spaceweather.com for aurora occurances.
