How often are animals going extinct?

It is estimated that every year, 50,000 species disappear.  Humans are said to have multiplied the natural rate of extinction from 100 to 1000 times faster.  New species do appear every year as well, but not at a fast enough rate to offset the current species lose.  Some scientists believe humans will be the cause of the sixth great extinction.
