How often to alpha males get replaced in herds?

In gorilla groups this doesn’t happen very often as younger gorillas generally leave the group try to attract their own females rather than compete with the current silverback gorilla (alpha male) for control of his current group. However, replacement does happen, and when it does, the new alpha male will generally kill all of the offspring of the former dominant male.
