The Navy is already making efforts to become more energy efficient. Already, many outfits and ships around the country have been retrofitted with things like greener light bulbs, high-efficiency boilers, and photovoltaics. They have also instituted programs for educating Navy Personnel on energy efficiency and energy management, as well as upgraded many old machines to energy-saving models. The Navy calculates that already they are avoiding $400 million in energy costs compared to their use in 1985. We can expect more upgrades and improvements in the coming years.
The Navy has a Department of Navy Energy Program that is focused on efficient use of energy and water resources as well as the use of renewable energy sources. The program focuses on innovation, investment in energy efficient technologies, increased community awareness and participation as well as recognition.
