The cost to build a nuclear plant varies depending on various factors and different sources report dissimilar numbers. The industry average is reported to be approximately $2,000 per installed kilowatt. Charles Barton on SCitizen reports that the new AP-1000 plants in China cost only about $1,200 per installed kW. Yet new research by Keystone Center is $3,600 to $4,000 per kW, not including interest. And the operating costs would take this total even further, at “30 ¢/kWh for the first 13 years until construction costs are paid followed by 18 ¢/kWh over the remaining lifetime of the plant.” This is also not including the costs of storing nuclear waste.
