Integrated Coastal Management predicts “more than half the world’s population lives within 60 km of the shoreline, and this could rise to three quarters by the year 2020.” However, they define the coast as “all the coastal floodplains, mangroves, marshes and tideflats as well as beaches and dunes and fringing coral reefs.”
