One of the most dramatic changes to extreme cold environments will likely occur by 2015. The Arctic sea ice may completely disappear during the summer months as soon as 2015 according to US scientists. Antarctica has been in a cooling trend, for the most part, but this is likely to reverse in the coming decades. With Alaska, the Arctic sea ice, and Antarctica all melting at an accelerating rate the world’s coldest environments are all changing. Species which rely on these cold climate extremes, such as pikas and polar bears, are already threatened by the changes.
