Average annual consumption of whale meat in Japan is 30g per person. The majority of those eating whale meat are now over 60 years old and 70% of Japanese between 15 and 39 (in 2008) have not even tried whale meat. This falling demand caused about 4,000 tons of excess meat to be frozen rather than put on the market in 2009. Many Japanese now look down on the practice of whaling and believe it is not sustainable, which is a large part of the reason for the Japanese government’s recent decision to halt its research whaling program.
