How much weight does a bear lose during hibernation?

It depends on the species of bear, and often on the gender as well. A female lactating black bear can drop as much as 40 percent of their body weight. A male black bear will shed much less, losing closer to 15 to 30 percent of its body weight. The average black bear weighs between 200 and 600 pounds, so that’s a weight loss of anywhere between 80 and 240 pounds for mama bears, and 30 to 180 for the males. Not insignificant!
