Jatropha is an agro-forestry species that thrives in dry, sandy soil with sufficient drainage, in areas where the rainfall is between 600 and 700 mm annually. A healthy crop can yield up to 8 kilograms per hectare, which, if properly processed, can be converted into 2.7 tons of jatropha oil. The oil is considered a potentially good source of alternative fuel.
