It depends on the side of the reservoir that the water is contained in before the water reaches the crops. If the reservoir is wide and shallow, much more water will be lost than if the reservoir is thin and deep. Much of the water that goes out to the crops will also be lost if the ground is more porous. Different irrigation systems are also more efficient than other ones. Drip irrigation systems are much more efficient than standard ones.
It’s hard to say exactly. Evaporation during irrigation depends on a huge variety of factors: humidity, wind speed, length of the water stream, surface area of water droplets, etc. It has been estimated, however, that no more than 5% of water used for irrigation evaporates.
