How much water does it take to make a seed start to grow?

Seeds from different species are responsive to different external factors. Some seeds will not germinate until enough water has pierced their thick coats. Other seeds require the temperature to reach a certain warmth. Others need to be broken before they will germinate. For example, pine seeds (pine cones) will not germinate unless they have been burned in fire.
