How much water does a dog need to drink every day?

It depends on factors such as size, age, and weather (see link below). But, in general, a dog should drink an average of 1 ounce of water per pound of body weight a day (e.g. a dog that weighs 40 pounds should drink around 40 ounces of water daily).

According to a veterinarian, it is recommended that a dog drink about one ounce of water for every pound that they weigh. Naturally that means that larger dogs need to drink more water in order to stay well hydrated. Fortunately, dogs will usually drink the right amount of fluids on their own, as long as their water bowl is clean and well-accessible. Lack of thirst can mean that there is something wrong with your pet and should be looked at immediately.
