Water is essential for dogs to survive. Dogs can be come extremely sick if they even lose 10% of their body water. Since dog sizes vary, the amount of water necessary per day varies.
An appropriate estimate is that a dog should drink 2.5x its food intake for that day.
Depending on the day, a dog’s water intake will fluctuate. If he is sick, he may refuse water. If the dog is exercising a lot that day or the weather is hot, he will want more. It is a good idea to leave a bowl out so the dog can control how much or little he wants.
