The steel industry recycles 25%-100% of its materials. This saves money, reduces energy consumption, decreases the amount of toxic waste generated by the industry, and lowers the amount of greenhouse gases produced.
However, steel is still the metal most commonly found in industrial and residential waste in the United States, with about 2.7 million tons of it being part of the municipal solid waste in 2010.
