How much water is used when washing ones hands?

There are two variables that need to be considered in determining this answer: how long you are washing your hands, and the flow rate of the water from the fixture. An average time would be 30 seconds and flow rate 2 gallons per minute. This would result in a gallon of water used every handwash if the water is allowed to run fully the entire time. Automatic sensor faucets with low flow fixtures can reduce this amount of water used by an estimated 70%. To reduce the amount of water used in your home, install a low flow faucet with aerator and turn off the water while you are scrubbing.
