As of 2002, 66 million acres of land in the United States were considered to be developed. This means that in 2002, 3 percent of the land was developed (97 percent was not urbanized). About 75 percent of the population lived on developed land. Combined with rural residential land, the percentage was 6.1 percent.

There were 747 million acres of forest land, 349 million acres of cropland, and 788 million acres of range and pasture land (41.4 percent of the U.S. not including Alaska) in 2002.
