The amount of places in the United States experiencing drought varies throughout the year. For instance, the percent area (according to the Palmer Drought Index) of the United States experiencing dought went from 27% in February to 16% in July. In early autumn, this figure expanded to 22%, while it shrank to 12% by the end of December. Drought-prone areas in 2009 included southern Texas, California, the southern Appalacians, and Hawaii.
As indicated above, it looks like the majority of areas currently experiencing drought are in the Southeast region of our country. Florida, Louisiana, and Texas all seem to be having a particularly hard go at things right now.
