Every year, approximately 14 billion pounds of trash are dumped into the ocean, with merchant ships generating almost 90 percent of marine waste. If you break this down by day, that means about 38,356,164 lbs a day, assuming (incorrectly) that the same amount of waste is dumped every day. But for an average number, that should work!
